The European institutions

The Parliament represents 500 million Europeans, who directly elect their representatives. After the elections of 2014, 751 MEP sit in the Parliament, the place where European laws and the EU budget are established.

The EU budget is also dealt with by the Council of the European Union, the institution where ministers from all member states meet to adopt laws and coordinate policies. It also hosts the European Council, it brings together Heads of State or Government of the 28 member states to establish the general policy guidelines of the EU. 

The Commission is the executive body of the EU it puts forward laws and implements them once they have been adopted It watches over compliance with the Treaties.
