On 8 October, the Council reached an agreement on a directive making European roads safer. This directive facilitates the exchange of information concerning registration among member states and the identification of drivers who commit driving offences.
Following this agreement, negotiations on the improvement of road safety with the European Parliament started. Member states can exchange national vehicle registration data with the aim of monitoring road safety, reducing the number of road traffic offences and speeding up the identification procedure of people who have committed road traffic offences abroad.
