Referendum in Scotland: Renzi's message to Cameron

After the result of the Scottish vote, the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, Matteo Renzi, sent a message to the British Prime Minister, David Cameron. Here is the message.

The Italian Government, which is now holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, welcomes the result of the vote which was democratically expressed by the Scottish people. The European Union will certainly benefit from the United Kingdom’s renewed commitment to strengthen our common action aimed at giving concrete answers to our citizens’ just demands: economic development and capability to face the many international challenges.

Emphasising diversity and the riches of our territories, rather than their fragmentation, is the Scottish people’s answer to all of us, a people that is justly proud of its history and traditions.

The Italian Government reiterates its strong will to build ever closer relationships with the Scottish government at bilateral, European and international level.

Best regards.
